Submission 1: Formal Email Letter

Dear Professor Fazilah

My name is, Ponnilavan. I am writing you this letter with the intend of introducing myself and my goals that I have planned to accomplish in this module. I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering. I worked on various projects that led me to develop my passion for product design engineering, involving product ideas and concepts that solve user problems.

Being an empathetic communicator complements my interpersonal quality. I can manage heated situations in a group setting. For instance, I was able to intervene a heated argument and prevent conflicts between two parties during a recent holiday trip. Besides this, I believe I am a good listener as well. This trait has helped me to build trust and respect in relationships. To point out, during my National Service, my peers would often find time to engage in conversations about their personal life and worries with me. Despite such skills, I realized that I could get sensitive when talking with people. To name, a recent discussion with a close friend of mine, turned out to be a disaster as I began dissenting his/her opinion. I took things personally, failing to keep myself grounded.

Nevertheless, to be able to improve my communication skills I have set two goals. Firstly, I have decided to engage in uncomfortable conversations that would create opportunities for to me improve. For example, I would often shy away from large group conversations, to avoid being judged for my opinions. Hence, I will start by voicing out my opinions in small group conversations, building confidence over time. Subsequently, I have decided to write better emails as well. This is highly crucial for me as I often send out proposals to potential clients regarding my photography services for business opportunities. This module has taught me the significance of tone and structure of an email. The relevant skills and knowledge I have acquired, will allow me to begin with minor refinements in my email writing. In addition, I believe my personality is distinct as I carry myself with passion. Unlike many, I am often seen to be curious about the  things around me.

I hope to develop my skills throughout this module and I look forward to the next class.

Yours sincerely,

Anbarasan Ponnilavan Mr

    1. I think this post has a good intro and conclusion. It also responded well to the assignment however do I assume you have more than one communication strength? I find the content expressive but unclear in various parts. It is also impressive in a way that I find his strength and weakness very personal. The content is coherent but does not flow well as a whole. The language used is clear and accurate too. The way the writer writes the post is very well-mannered.

  2. Formatting of the email is good, however it is missing a subject line and there is no need for a comma after 'Yours sincerely'. Apart from that, all points were answered in a short and concise manner. Language used is clear and I am able to understand and feel what the writer is telling his audience through his expressive writing. He used many different vocabularies to express his thoughts and emotions which impressed me. Overall, the email was well written and I was able to know more about the writer.

  3. I resonate deeply with Ponni as I share the same sentiments about being a good listener as well as stepping out of my comfort zone by putting myself in uncomfortable conversations. I enjoyed reading Ponni’s blog post as I feel like it is succinct in content. However, the structuring could be improved as it feels chunky. For example, Ponni’s strength of being an empathetic communicator is quite similar to being a good listener. Keeping it concise will improve the flow and make his point clearer. I’m also impressed that Ponni not only provided two solid areas of improvement but has also taken the first step to achieving them. This is something that we can all learn from Ponni. Format wise it is okay, there are some minor errors such as “Yours sincerely,” should not have the comma and the "Mr" at the signing-off should be bracketed. In conclusion, the letter responds well to the assignment. With better structuring, Ponni’s letter can be further improved.
